The rich and very diverse coinage of Vietnam has a thousand-year long history. The first Chinese-style coins appears in the middle of the 10th century, under the rule of the Đinh Dynasty (968-981). The cash Chinese-style coins were continuously produced under various rulers and dynasties until 1945.

The Vietnamese coinage is fasinating and complicated. The Emperors produced official large-sized coinage with the appropriate period titles (just like in China), but various local lords of the feudal Kingdom also often produced their own coinage. Furthermore, numerous rebels cast coins as well. Trade coins cast in Japan for the Vietnamese trade also circulated all over Vietnam. The picture is further complicated by the casting of numerous imitations of all of the above, ranging in quality from "near-original" to extremely stylized and crude.

All this variety makes collecting Vietnamese coins a challenge, since the coins are not well-understood and studied, but very rewarding, as the coins allow to build a complicated political picture of Vietnam of the last millenium.
