Western Kshatrapas (Satraps) (c.50-450 AD)

The coins of the Western Kshatrapas are unparalleled in the ancient world. They minted high quality silver coins in a single denomination (drachmas) showing the portrait of the King and a date on obverse, and a long Brahmi inscription on the reverse giving the name, titles and the patronymic of the King. Nearly all their coins are dated - they remain the only known ancient dynasty that so obsessively dated their coins. We offer a huge selection of the Kshatrapa coins in our store - if you are looking for something you cannot find, please let us know.

The Western Satraps, Western Kshatrapas, or Kshaharatas (35–405 CE) were Indo-Scythian (Saka) rulers of the western and central part of India (Saurashtra and Malwa: modern Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh states). The Western Satraps were contemporaneous with the Kushans who ruled the northern part of the Indian subcontinent and were possibly their overlords, and the Satavahana (Andhra) who ruled in Central India. The Saka kingdom was completely destroyed by Chandragupta II of the Gupta Empire in the 4th century CE.
