Early coins and minor Duchies (before 1500 AD)

Earliest coins of Russia were struck on small pieces of silver cut from a silver wire, thus they are known as "wire money". Before the unification of Russia under Muscovy, many independent and semi-independent Russian duchies or principalities struck their own coins. These early coins remain very popular with the collectors.
