The YHD ("yehud") series of ancient Jewish coins was minted during the Achaemenid period, roughly between the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, when the region of Judah (Yehud) was a province under Persian rule. These small silver coins, often called Yehud coins, are among the earliest examples of Jewish coinage. They typically feature Aramaic inscriptions such as "YHD" (short for Yehud, the Aramaic name for Judah) and depict symbols like lilies, falcons, owls, or human figures, often adapted from Persian or local iconography. These coins represent both administrative autonomy under Persian oversight and the early development of a distinct Jewish cultural and political identity in the post-Exilic period.
