Bust of the Kidarite King facing, flames over his shoulders // Horse standing right. 14mm, 1.02 grams. Gobl -; Mitchiner -.
This is a seemingly unpublished Kidarite type in excellent quality. This type is known from ancient Bactria, where it was probably minted by the invading Kidarites (the obverse style of this coin, with the facing King, was used only by the Kidarites).
Kidarites (Red Huns) migrated into Bactria from the north, displacing the Kushano-Sasanians, and established control there around the mid-4th century CE, making Bactria (modern-day northern Afghanistan and southern Uzbekistan) a key part of their kingdom. They even adopted elements of Kushano-Bactrian culture and rulers like Kidara styled themselves as "King of the Kushans," documenting their rule through coins found in the region.
