DN CONST-ANS P F AVG, diademed bust right / VOT/XX/MVLT/XXX within wreath, SMALG in exergue. 17mm, 1.73 grams. Mint of Alexandria, RIC 34.

Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great and Fausta, ruled the western Roman Empire from 337 to 350 AD. After his father’s death, he initially shared power with his brothers Constantine II and Constantius II, but became sole ruler of the West following Constantine II’s death in 340. Known for his support of Nicene Christianity and his efforts to protect religious orthodoxy, Constans also issued laws concerning Jews and promoted Christian moral reforms. His later reign was marked by unpopularity and accusations of misrule, leading to his overthrow and execution in 350 AD by the usurper Magnentius.
