The Republic of Biafra was a short-lived secessionist state in southeastern Nigeria that existed from 1967 to 1970. Predominantly inhabited by the Igbo people, it declared independence under Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu following ethnic tensions, massacres, and political crises in Nigeria. The move sparked the Nigerian Civil War, during which Biafra faced a blockade, severe famine, and heavy fighting. After nearly three years of conflict and humanitarian disaster, Biafra surrendered in January 1970, and the territory was reintegrated into Nigeria.
