The Umayyad Caliphate (661–750 CE) was the first great hereditary Islamic dynasty, established by Mu'awiya I following the First Muslim Civil War. With its capital at Damascus, the Umayyads created one of the largest empires in history, stretching from Spain and North Africa in the west to Central Asia and the Indus Valley in the east. Under Caliph Abd al-Malik (685–705), Arabic became the principal language of administration, and major monetary reforms introduced distinctive Islamic gold, silver, and copper coinage. Despite its military successes and cultural achievements, the dynasty was overthrown by the Abbasid Revolution in 750, although a surviving branch established the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba in Spain in 756.
