The Qara Qoyunlu, or Black Sheep Turkomans, were a Turkoman tribal confederation that ruled parts of present-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, eastern Turkey and parts of the Middle East from the late 14th to the mid-15th century. They rose to prominence after the decline of the Ilkhanate and established their capital in Tabriz. Under their most powerful leader, Qara Yusuf (r. 1389–1420), they resisted both Timurid and Ottoman pressures, expanding their domain significantly.
