Mohammad Yaqub Khan (1879) was Emir of Afghanistan and a son of Sher Ali Khan. He came to power during the Second Anglo-Afghan War and in May 1879 signed the Treaty of Gandamak, accepting British control over Afghanistan’s foreign relations and ceding several frontier territories. Following the murder of the British envoy Sir Louis Cavagnari at Kabul, Yaqub abdicated in October 1879 and subsequently lived in exile in British India; his coinage nevertheless continued to be issued into 1880.
