The Bhopal State was a princely state in central India founded in 1723 by Dost Mohammad Khan, an Afghan soldier in the service of the Mughal Empire. It became one of the largest and most influential princely states under British paramountcy and was notable for being ruled by a succession of four female rulers, the Begums of Bhopal, during the 19th and early 20th centuries. After Indian independence, Bhopal acceded to the India in 1949, ending more than two centuries of princely rule.
