The Maratha Confederacy was a powerful alliance of Maratha chiefs that dominated much of the Indian subcontinent during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Emerging after the decline of the Mughal Empire, it expanded rapidly under the leadership of the Peshwas while allowing major houses such as the Holkars, Scindias, Gaekwads, and Bhonsles considerable autonomy. At its height, the confederacy controlled vast territories across central and western India, but internal rivalries and successive defeats in the Anglo-Maratha Wars led to its dissolution and the establishment of British supremacy over most of India.
