Khosrow II (590–628 CE), known as Khosrow Parviz (“the Victorious”), was one of the last great rulers of the Sasanian Empire. After regaining his throne with Byzantine assistance, he later waged a prolonged war against Byzantium, during which Sasanian armies captured Jerusalem in 614 and Egypt, and advanced deep into Asia Minor. The dramatic Byzantine recovery under Heraclius led to Khosrow’s overthrow and execution in 628, initiating a period of political instability that greatly weakened the empire shortly before the Arab conquests.
