Khosrow I (531–579 CE), also known as Khosrow Anushirvan (“the Immortal Soul”), was one of the most important rulers of the Sasanian Empire. His reign was marked by major administrative and taxation reforms, military campaigns against the Byzantine Empire, and the expansion of Sasanian power in Arabia, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Remembered in later Persian tradition as an ideal and just monarch, Khosrow also encouraged scholarship and learning, while his abundant silver drachms became one of the characteristic coinages of the late Sasanian period.
