The Ghaznavid Empire was a powerful Persianate Muslim dynasty that ruled from 977 to 1186 CE, controlling territories across present-day Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, and northern India. Founded by Sabuktigin, the empire reached its greatest extent under his son Mahmud of Ghazni, whose military campaigns and patronage made Ghazni a major center of Persian culture and Islamic learning. After suffering a decisive defeat by the Seljuks in 1040, the Ghaznavids gradually shifted their focus toward the Indian subcontinent, where they remained influential until they were overthrown by the Ghurid dynasty in 1186.
