The Gujarat Sultanate was an independent Muslim kingdom in western India, founded in 1407 by Zafar Khan Muzaffar (Muzaffar Shah I) following the weakening of the Delhi Sultanate. With its capital eventually established at Ahmedabad, it became one of the wealthiest and most powerful states in India, prospering through maritime trade from ports such as Cambay and Surat. The sultanate reached its height under Mahmud Begada (1458–1511), but declined during the 16th century and was finally conquered and incorporated into the Mughal Empire by Akbar in 1573.
