Khusrau Malik was the last ruler of the Ghaznavid dynasty, reigning from 1160 to 1186 during a time of terminal decline. Based in Lahore, he ruled a diminished state confined to parts of the Punjab, as the Ghaznavids had long since lost their Afghan and Iranian territories to the Ghurids and other powers. Khusrau Malik struggled to maintain autonomy amid growing Ghurid pressure and paid tribute to them in a vain effort to preserve his throne. In 1186, he was captured by the Ghurid Sultan Mu'izz al-Din Muhammad (also known as Muhammad of Ghor), marking the end of Ghaznavid rule. His fall paved the way for the Ghurid conquest of northern India and the eventual rise of the Delhi Sultanate.
