Scarce drachm, Jouan-jouan (Rouran Khaganate), post-Kushan Bactria, c.195-230 AD

Uncertain deity standing, crude tamgha in the left field // King seated cross-legged on a couch. 22mm, 3.24 grams. Mitchiner ACW 3378ff.

Light imitations of the Huvishka's coinage were issued in a variety of sizes and weights (from about 1 gram+) - these imitations are usually attributed to Jouan-Jouan themselves, though it is likely that they were issued by a variety of different people for generations after the Kushans lost control over the Northern Bactria.

The Jouan-Jouan, better known as the Rouran Khaganate, were a powerful nomadic confederation that dominated the eastern Eurasian steppe from the late 4th to the mid-6th century CE, centered in modern Mongolia and southern Siberia. Emerging from Xiongnu successor groups, they are historically significant as the first polity known to use the imperial title “Khagan,” ruling over a multi-ethnic steppe empire through tribute, military force, and mobile cavalry warfare. Although they never ruled Central Asia directly, their dominance and later collapse set off major population movements, pushing Hunnic groups westward and indirectly shaping the post-Kushan world of Bactria and northern India. In 552 CE the Rouran were decisively overthrown by their former vassals, the Göktürks, after which their confederation disintegrated and surviving elements were absorbed into emerging Turkic and Central Asian peoples.
