Maues (c. 85–60 BCE) was one of the earliest major Indo-Scythian kings, establishing Śaka power in Gandhāra and the northwestern Punjab following the decline of Indo-Greek authority. His extensive coinage combines Greek, Iranian and Indian elements and employs bilingual Greek and Kharoṣṭhī legends, usually styling him “Great King of Kings.” His reign marks an important stage in the transition from Indo-Greek to Indo-Scythian political dominance in northwestern India.
