The Tomaras of Delhi were a Rajput dynasty that ruled parts of northern India, including the region around Delhi, from approximately the 8th to the 12th century CE. They are credited with founding the city of Lal Kot, the earliest known fortified settlement in Delhi, around the 11th century, under the rule of Anangpal Tomar. The Tomaras established Delhi as a regional power, and their reign marked the rise of the city as a political and cultural center. Eventually, the Tomaras were overthrown by the Chauhans (Chahamanas) under Prithviraj Chauhan in the late 12th century. Though their political power faded, the Tomaras left a lasting legacy as the earliest known rulers of Delhi, setting the stage for its prominence in later medieval Indian history.
