Aelia Eudocia (c. 400–460 CE) was Byzantine empress as the wife of Theodosius II, whom she married in 421. Born in Athens as Athenais, she was highly educated in classical Greek literature and converted to Christianity before her marriage. A prominent poet and patron, she later settled in Jerusalem, where she sponsored churches and charitable institutions and became an important figure in the religious and cultural life of the eastern Roman Empire.
