Chinese characters Wu Zhu / Two words in an uncertain script. 20mm, 1.52 grams. Hartill 10.48; Gratzer/Fishman B11.4.

The people of Qiuci Kingdom cast bilingual Wu Zhu coins. To the standard Chinese layout they added the inscription in the “Qiuci script.” The script is probably a modified Kharoshti script (sometimes called “Qiuci script”), an abugida script of Northern Indian origin that was popular in the area. Alternatively, it might be a Brahmi word “Chatra” (royal umbrella, a symbol of royalty, or the abbreviated name of the ruler).
