King's head right in Kshatrapa style, corrupt Greek legend around // Garuda standing facing, with wings spread; Brahmi legend around: Parama bhagavata Maharajadhiraja Sri Chandragupta Vikramaditya ("(coin) of Great King of Kings Chandragupta Vikramaditya, supreme devotee of Vishnu"). 15mm, 1.99 grams. Uncertain mint in eastern Gujarat. Todd/Fishman "The Silver Coinage of the Gupta Empire and Associated States in Western India" #Type G1; Pieper 867; MACW 4821.
Beautiful toned high quality example.
Chandragupta minted coins in the style of the Western Satraps, whom he conquered. These coins circulated in Gujarat (the area previously controlled by the Western Satraps) and were of the same size, weight and style as the old coins. Coins of Chandragupta are rare.
