Rare silver dirham, Qara Hulegu or Yasu Mongke, c.1242-50, Chaghatai Mongols, Almaligh mint (A-1982)

al-Maligh in a circle, Shahada in a circular margin, double circle and another decorated border around // al-Malik al-Azam ("The Great King"), date written out around (64x), Almaligh. 19mm, 1.69 grams. A-1982; cf. Zeno 24130.

Mint name Almaligh within circle in reverse center. The site of Almaligh is now in China, in the northwest corner of Xinjiang province, about 50 miles west of the modern city Yining. The partially visible date corresponds to c.1242-1250 CE. During this period the Chagatai Khanate was ruled by Qara Hulegu (1242-1246) and then by Yasu Mongke (1246-1252).
