Tiberius II Constantine (578–582) was a Byzantine emperor of the Justinian dynasty. A trusted military commander under Justin II, he was adopted and appointed Caesar in 574 when Justin became increasingly unable to govern, and succeeded him as sole emperor in 578. His brief reign was dominated by warfare with the Sasanian Persians in the east and growing Avar and Slavic pressure in the Balkans. Tiberius was remembered as a relatively generous and moderate ruler, though his spending placed considerable strain on the imperial treasury. Shortly before his death in 582, he appointed the successful general Maurice as his successor and married him to his daughter Constantina.
