Valentinian III (r. 425–455 CE) was Western Roman Emperor during the final decades of the Western Roman Empire. Ascending the throne as a child, he ruled largely under the influence of his mother, Galla Placidia, and later relied on the powerful general Flavius Aetius. His reign saw increasing barbarian invasions and the loss of imperial territory, although Aetius successfully helped defeat Attila the Hun at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains. After personally arranging Aetius' murder in 454, Valentinian weakened his own position and was assassinated the following year, accelerating the decline of the Western Empire.
