Honorius (r. 393–423 CE) was Western Roman Emperor during a period of severe decline and instability in the Western Roman Empire. The son of Theodosius I, he became emperor at a young age and relied heavily on his general Stilicho. His reign is best known for the sack of Rome by the Visigoths under Alaric I in 410 CE, the first capture of the city in nearly 800 years. Although he ruled for three decades, Honorius is often regarded as a weak emperor whose reign coincided with the accelerating collapse of Roman authority in the West.
