Anastasius I (r. 491–518 CE) was a capable and reform-minded Byzantine emperor who strengthened the finances of the Eastern Roman Empire and left a substantial treasury surplus. He is particularly noted for his monetary reforms, which improved the empire's bronze coinage system and introduced the large folles that became a cornerstone of Byzantine currency. Anastasius also fortified the empire's defenses, including the construction of the Anastasian Wall near Constantinople. His prudent administration helped ensure the stability and prosperity of the Eastern Empire at a time when the Western Roman Empire had already collapsed.
