Constantine the Great (306–337 CE) was one of the most influential Roman emperors, reunifying the Empire after the Tetrarchic civil wars and defeating his final rival, Licinius, in 324. He famously supported Christianity, convened the Council of Nicaea in 325, and founded Constantinople as a new imperial capital in 330. His long reign brought major administrative, military and monetary reforms and profoundly shaped the later Roman and Byzantine worlds.
