The state of Liang (better known as the state of Wei) was one of the seven major powers of the Warring States period (475–221 BCE). It emerged in 403 BCE when the old state of Jin was partitioned into Han, Zhao, and Wei, with Wei initially the strongest of the three. Its rulers, who often bore the title "King of Liang," made Daliang (modern Kaifeng, Henan) their capital, giving the state its alternate name. Wei gained early prominence under Marquess Wen and his advisor Li Kui, who promoted legalist-inspired reforms and military expansion. However, Wei’s strength declined after defeats by Qin, particularly at the Battle of Maling in 341 BCE against Qi, where the famous strategist Sun Bin crushed its army. Though weakened, Wei remained an important power until it was finally conquered by Qin in 225 BCE after Qin forces diverted the Yellow River to flood Daliang, bringing an end to the state.
