The Ansei Chogin were billon (debased silver with 13.5% silver content) coins issued in Japan during the Ansei era (1854–1860), under the Tokugawa shogunate. Introduced as part of late-Edo period monetary reforms, these oval-shaped coins were designed to address the scarcity of silver by using a debased alloy while maintaining a silver appearance. The coins typically bore inscriptions such as "Chogin" (long silver) and sometimes indicated their value or issuing authority. Although they circulated alongside traditional oblong silver coins (gin) and rectangular gold coins (koban), the Ansei Chogin reflected Japan’s economic pressures and attempts to stabilize currency before the Meiji Restoration. Due to their reduced silver content, they were often met with skepticism and contributed to continued monetary instability.
