Levon I (Leo I, reigned 1198–1219) was the first king of Cilician Armenia, transforming it from a principality into a recognized kingdom with papal and Byzantine support. A shrewd diplomat, he balanced alliances with Crusader states, Byzantium, and Italian maritime powers like Genoa and Venice. His reign strengthened trade, fortified defenses, and expanded the kingdom’s territory. Levon maintained independence in foreign policy, sometimes aiding Crusaders, sometimes resisting them. His rule brought stability and prosperity, marking the start of Cilicia’s “golden age.” He died in 1219, leaving his daughter Isabella as heir.
