The Afrighids were a native dynasty that ruled Khwarezm from roughly the early 4th century to 995 CE, with their capital at Kath along the lower Oxus (Amu Darya). Emerging after the decline of Kushano-Sasanian authority, they governed a culturally distinct region that preserved its own language, script, and Zoroastrian traditions well into the Islamic period. Although Khwarezm came under Arab control in the 8th century, the Afrighids survived as local rulers and gradually converted to Islam while maintaining considerable autonomy. Their dynasty ended in 995 when they were overthrown by the rival Maʾmunids of Gurganj, marking the end of pre-Islamic royal lineage in Khwarezm.
