Constantine IV was Byzantine emperor from 668 to 685 CE, succeeding his father Constans II. His reign is best remembered for the successful defense of Constantinople against prolonged Arab attacks in the 670s, which checked the Umayyad advance into Byzantine territory. Constantine also convened the Third Council of Constantinople (680–681), which condemned Monothelitism and helped restore religious unity with Rome. In the Balkans, however, he was unable to prevent the establishment of the Bulgar state south of the Danube. He died in 685 and was succeeded by his son Justinian II.
