The Roman city commemorative coins (c. 330–335 CE) were introduced by Constantine the Great to celebrate Constantinople as the empire’s new capital while also honouring Rome. The two principal types bear the personifications VRBS ROMA, with the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus on the reverse, and CONSTANTINOPOLIS, with Victory standing on a ship’s prow; they were struck at numerous imperial mints and circulated widely throughout the Roman Empire.
