A pleasing example of the Confederate $5 note of September 2, 1861, Criswell Type T-37 (Criswell #285), Second Series, printed by B. Duncan of Columbia, South Carolina. The distinctive central vignette depicts a sailor seated beside bales of cotton, with a portrait of Confederate Secretary of the Treasury C. G. Memminger at lower left and allegorical figures of Justice and Ceres at right. This example is in a nice Fine+ condition, with good overall appearance and honest circulation wear. It bears very faint cross-cut cancellations, which are barely noticeable, along with two tiny pinholes. An attractive and very presentable example of this classic early Confederate issue.
