An attractive example of the Confederate $5 note of September 2, 1861, Criswell Type T-36 (catalogue number 274), printed by J.T. Paterson in Columbia, SC. The distinctive central vignette depicts Commerce seated beside bales and barrels, with a sailing vessel in the background, while the portrait at left is C. G. Memminger, Confederate Secretary of the Treasury. Hand-signed and individually numbered, these notes were issued during the first year of the Civil War and circulated extensively throughout the Confederacy. This example is in a pleasing F+/Very Fine condition, generally problem-free and attractive, with honest circulation wear and good overall eye appeal. A nice representative example of early Confederate paper money.
