Bronze pul w/Genoese "gate" countermark from Caffa, c.1252-87 CE, Mongol Jochids - Golden Horde.

The copper puls of the Golden Horde that were countermarked by the Genoese at Caffa (modern Feodosia) are a fascinating example of medieval monetary adaptation in a major Black Sea trading hub. Originally struck by Mongol authorities for circulation within the Golden Horde, these low-value copper coins continued to be used after the Genoese took control of Caffa in the late 13th and 14th centuries. To legitimize their circulation under Genoese administration and to meet the needs of local commerce, the Genoese applied small countermarks transforming Mongol coins into officially accepted currency of the colony.
