The Jaunpur Sultanate (1394–1479) was an independent Muslim kingdom in northern India, centred on Jaunpur in present-day Uttar Pradesh. It was founded by Malik Sarwar after the weakening of the Delhi Sultanate and was ruled by the Sharqi dynasty, which made Jaunpur an important centre of Islamic learning, architecture and culture. The sultanate reached its greatest power under Ibrahim Shah Sharqi (1402–1440), controlling much of the middle Gangetic plain and repeatedly challenging Delhi. It was eventually conquered by the Lodi sultan Bahlul Lodi, who incorporated Jaunpur into the Delhi Sultanate.
