Yildiz was a military slave (ghulam) or Mamluk of Muhammad Ghori (Muʿizz al-Din Muhammad), similar to other prominent commanders like Qutb al-Din Aibak. These slave generals formed the core of Muhammad Ghori’s elite military leadership and were often entrusted with governing key regions of his empire.

After Muhammad Ghori's death in 1206, these former slaves and generals - though technically freed and powerful in their own right - competed for control of various parts of the crumbling Ghurid Empire. Yildiz's seizure of Ghazna was part of this broader struggle among former ghulams, each attempting to carve out their own realm in the post-Ghurid power vacuum. So while the historical record is not always detailed about his early status, Yildiz is generally understood to have been a former slave-soldier who rose to rulership, in keeping with the Mamluk tradition of the period.
