Ivan IV the Terrible (1547–1584) was the first ruler of Russia to be formally crowned Tsar, transforming Muscovy into a powerful centralized state. His reign saw the conquest of the Kazan and Astrakhan Khanates, greatly expanding Russian territory. However, his rule was also marked by brutal repression, mass executions, and the notorious Oprichnina. He died in 1584 and was succeeded by his son Feodor I.
