Before the widespread adoption of struck coinage in Celtic territories, particularly from the late Iron Age onward, various forms of proto-currency were used across regions inhabited by Celtic peoples - including the Danube basin, Gaul (modern-day France), Britain, and Ireland. Among the most intriguing of these were Celtic ring money: small gold, silver, or bronze rings that varied in size, weight, and style. These rings likely functioned both as a medium of exchange and a form of portable wealth, sometimes used in trade or as offerings, dowries, or symbols of status.

The simplicity of early ring forms gradually gave way to more elaborate and artistic variants, such as "wheel money" in Gaul, star-shaped or multi-lobed rings, and even interlinked chains of rings, all of which reflect the distinctive craftsmanship and symbolic culture of the Celtic world. Other associated proto-currencies include arrowhead- and bell-shaped ingots, which also played a role in early trade systems. Though their exact economic function is still debated - some may have had ritual or decorative purposes - these artifacts are now highly collectible, valued for their rarity, beauty, and historical mystery. Many can still be worn today as pendants or rings, connecting modern admirers with the deep and artistic legacy of ancient Celtic civilization.
