Trebonianus Gallus (reigned 251–253 CE) became Roman emperor during the Crisis of the Third Century after the death of Decius in battle against the Goths. His rule was troubled from the start: he made peace with the Goths on unfavorable terms, which damaged his reputation, and the empire continued to face plagues, invasions, and internal unrest. Gallus attempted to maintain stability by elevating his son Volusianus as co-emperor, but growing military dissatisfaction and renewed barbarian pressure weakened his position. When Aemilian, the governor of Moesia, defeated Gothic raiders and was proclaimed emperor by his troops, Gallus marched to confront him but was killed by his own soldiers in 253. His short reign is remembered as another turbulent chapter in Rome’s mid-third-century struggles.
