Branch left, diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust facing left // N/IIII. 11mm, 1.88 grams. Carthage mint.
Under the Vandal Kingdom, Carthage continued to function as a major mint producing semi-autonomous bronze coinage, notably small denominations such as 42, 21, 12, and 4 nummi (as catalogued by Grierson). These issues retained Roman monetary traditions in denomination and design, but were struck under Vandal authority after the city’s capture in 439 CE. While still showing imperial-style motifs and occasional references to earlier Roman types, the coins often display simplified or degraded imagery and inscriptions, reflecting both continuity with late Roman fiscal systems and the localized, transitional nature of Vandal rule in North Africa.
