The Wang Jingwei regime (1940–1945), officially the Reorganized National Government of the Republic of China, was a Japanese-sponsored government established at Nanjing during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Headed by former Nationalist leader Wang Jingwei, it claimed to be the legitimate government of China in opposition to Chiang Kai-shek’s government at Chongqing, but in practice depended heavily on Japanese military and political support. It administered substantial Japanese-occupied areas of eastern China, issued its own currency and postage, and maintained armed forces, before collapsing following Japan’s surrender in August 1945.
