Tranquebar (Tharangambadi) on the Coromandel Coast was the principal settlement of Danish India, established in 1620 after an agreement with the Nayak ruler of Tanjore. Centred on Fort Dansborg, it served as a Danish trading post for more than two centuries, until Denmark sold Tranquebar and its other Indian possessions to the British East India Company in 1845.
