Maximianus Herculius (286–305, 306–308 CE) was a Roman emperor and colleague of Diocletian, who appointed him to govern the western half of the Empire. Taking the divine association Herculius with Hercules, Maximian campaigned successfully against Germanic tribes and rebels in Gaul and North Africa and later became one of the senior rulers of Diocletian’s Tetrarchy. He abdicated with Diocletian in 305 but subsequently returned to imperial politics, eventually dying in 310 after rebelling against his son-in-law Constantine the Great.
