The “Wheel Money” of Istros refers to early bronze coins from the Greek colony of Istros (Histria), dated roughly to the 6th–5th centuries BC. Shaped like small wheels with spokes, they are inscribed ISTROS on the reverse, though the inscription is usually weak and only traces of it are visible. They likely served as pre-monetary trade tokens or proto-coinage before struck coins became common in the region. Their exact value and function remain debated, but they appear in local hoards alongside other primitive money forms. These objects illustrate the experimental phase of early currency development in the Greek world.
