Wu Sangui (1612-1678) was a decisive and controversial figure during the Ming-Qing transition. In 1644, he opened Shanhai Pass to the Manchus, enabling the Qing to defeat the rebel Li Zicheng and effectively ending the Ming dynasty. During the Southern Ming period, Wu did not support the Ming loyalist regimes in the south. Instead, he served the Qing and was rewarded as Prince of Pingxi, ruling Yunnan and Guizhou as a powerful semi-autonomous warlord. He later rebelled against the Qing in the Revolt of the Three Feudatories and briefly proclaimed his own dynasty in 1678 before dying the same year.
