BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛEΩN MEΓAΛOY / AZOY, City Goddess enthroned quarter left, holding cornucopia in left arm, right hand raised, Greek legend around // Hermes standing facing, turned slightly to left, caduceus in left hand, right arm outstretched, control marks at left and right, Kharoshthi legend around Maharajasa rajarajasa mahatasa / Ayasa. 26mm, 11.48 grams. BMC 127-132; Whitehead 209-217; Senior 101; MIG 831; Hoover HGC 659.

Fascinating coin - seems to be overstruck on an older type. A lot of the undertype is visible on both sides, and the undertype can be identified as a pentachalkon of Azes I (Senior-100.10, type with elephant and bull). Very rare and interesting - the overstruck coins from this period are of importance, as they help to sequence the Indo-Scythian rulers and coin types.

Azes II was king of Bactria from 35 BC to 5 AD. He is often associated with one of the three "Magi", the "Wise Men" or "Kings", who visited Jesus on the night of his birth according to the Gospel of Matthew.
